So in October Axton (from Zombie Oaks) and I will be hitting our first con, it’ll be a local con so we’re starting small, but I’ve never done a con and I know you get all sorts of bizarre con requests… well more and more there’s a con request that I realized I might be ill suited to face… My Little Pony. I’ve never attempted it… so I’m staring down this gap in my geeky experience thinking… I need to at least give this a shot or else I’m gonna get blind sided by it, but like most things I gotta put my spin on it or I’m not gonna enjoy it.

twilight sparkleTwilight Sparkle: First I went purely My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic I watched the first episode which seemed to center around Twilight Sparkle so boom Twilight Sparkle seemed the obvious choice (which I gotta ask… is that a dig at sparkly vampires? Enquiring minds!) Okay I think I did okay considering this was my first Pony attempt!

Then I had to do something a little more me… What if I made a Pony?… or better yet… what should a Tank-Monkey Pony look like?

tankpony2Enter “Infantry Shrapnel”: My Little War Horse: Engagement Means Tactics, obviously he drives a Tank cuz that’s how we roll around here… also do not call it a “cutie mark” unless you want a face full of hoof. He has absolutely no sense of humor about this… (it’s a battle scar it just happens to look like a tank-monkey helmet) I had to put him in the tank and decided he was wearing fatigues for this go around… I had to play with the head seems the ponies have these ears that are very stylized and maybe I needed those showing but I found ultimately it looked weird to have the ears outside of the helmet… this wasn’t like Tank-Monkey where I could get away with having the helmet sit between the ears… and what better way to seal the deal than to have a monkey getting in the way of this finely tuned military equine machine.

tankpony3But that didn’t feel adequately MLP enough for me so I did one more so you could see a full blown treatment including the “cutie mark”

Not a Brony… But…

Okay right off the bat I had someone ask me if this made me a Brony… no. I’ve seen exactly one episode, before I decided “meh, it’s not bad but I get it… and I don’t have time for it.” But it’s weird that it’s even a thought… it’s weird to me that this brony thing is even…. a thing…  I don’t look down on it, and I don’t even mean to be dismissive, I just don’t get the concept… I mean why does liking something mean you gotta pigeon hole yourself… I like Star Wars and Star Trek… I’d never self-identify as a “Trekkie” I dunno, I suppose there is this whole community thing that gets built up around a fandom and maybe I’m missing out… but  it seems a little redundant to make a term gender specific… I mean we don’t have a term for Female Whovians… do we? And if we do and I just hadn’t hear it… WHY?! Isn’t a fan just a fan? If I was a male Julia Roberts fan would I need a term to make it more masculine?… (okay bad example but hopefully I’m making my point) I suppose I’m over thinking it, I suppose it’s just a fun nickname thing that helps build a community but I don’t understand why we gotta get so micro-selective about our fandom… it seems awful limiting…

But regardless, good for My Little Pony, glad it got to see a comeback. I posted these pics on Twitter and Facebook and my social media interactions definitely saw a spike! It’s been a fun experiment, and I’ve diminished my fear of drawing ponies…

As for Bronies? To quote the immortal Digital Underground…

Let’s leave it at that…
